If you look at this sword as a protective shield, this is actually one of the most powerful swords yet.

But does it only protect the user when emerged in the earth, like a sort of Excalibur status effect, or is it also a shield when being used?

I suppose the protection of the sword would be active in battle, IF you considered being in battle to be a vacation for you. But in that case it would only prevent any outside forces of intervening with the battle (your vacation).
