In DCCXLVIII you can see that the crown was knocked off of Rapier Tapir after Ryan defeated him.

Don’t know if we’ll ever find out but my wild guess is that it looks like the Sword Whisperer’s pants.

Also I just realized, Ryan was off on his quest when Rapier Tapir became king, so he might not have been aware that RT was the current legal king, hence why he tried to return the crown to Joy.
