I think Mattew is really trying to drive deep the point that Uncle Wheaton did in fact burn down his home country intentionally.

I really hope we learn why Uncle Wheaton did what he did. And, more importantly, why’d he kidnap Ryan? Why not leave him to die like he did everyone else? I also hope we learn why he looks the way he does. Did he get burned in the fire? Or more likely, some time prior?
