The use of multiple gnomes implies that gnomes do not have full souls by themselves. Or they just have really tiny ones.

Or if you read the secret text, using multiple gnomes might imply that the gnome lifespan is shorter than a humans. As you probably need 100 years worth of soul juice to create one artifical sword. As that is how long it takes for a regular sword to manifest a soul.
