I noticed that if you count by the eyes they’ll have (one eyed demon, two eyed demon, etc.) , it goes counterclockwise.

Also, what shape are their eyeballs? Are they ovals or is there some space distortion going on?

Oh. My. Goodness. How did I not see this earlier.

The middle of the word pandemonium has the word demon in the middle of it.

The creator of these comics is an absolute genius

Bladies, Gentleswords, and everyone in between, may I present: The Eight Eyed Demon Sword!

If we start counterclockwise at the top, and count the eyes, eye number 7 is the only one we have not seen yet. (It is the orange one with a black and red eye)

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the sheer amount of work it must have taken to draw Pandemonium? Matthew is an artist.

I don’t like that guy.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA

So you have no reason to believe me about this. But, last night I had just finished writing a post, got distracted, and never posted it.

Here’s what I said:

I think it’s likely that the demons overall are a counterpart to Argok. In addition to being the god of time and change, he’s the god of mischief and deception (citation: bio) plus fertility (citation: rune translation in that comic about mimic beard). The demons take this to an extreme, and always perform evil acts in search of power and destruction, while Argok seems to do it out of genuine care for people. When the demons threaten to end the world, it’s Argok who quite literally splits himself up and sacrifices his godhood and immortality to become the seven demigods, keeping those demons sealed (albeit not very effectively). In this case it’s totally possible that the demons came from Bograk’s light world, which would correspond to the inversion of light/dark symbolism that’s already been going on in this comic since Kargob was named the god of darkness in comic 35.

As for Greg and Baltad, I don’t really mind that they’re not direct opposites, as it offers that tasty Aerith and Bob vibe, which is always a fantastic joke.

All this, of course, is something which could be genuinely fascinating to explore. But at this point I’m almost expecting the next comic to be another contextless pun instead of continuing any of the half-dozen arcs Matthew has left unfinished.

Of course, I was wrong about that last bit- and thankfully so.

A couple additional notes:

  • I wasn’t expecting there to genuinely be a 7-eyed demon sword, and now I’m super-curious about where it went. I checked the Monster Magician page, but his coloration is pretty different, so I don’t think it has to do with him (which iirc was a theory). Neither does it match up with the weird Kargob from The Dividing Cut. However, I should point out that Pandemonium’s profile page has that eye as its profile picture. Is it possible that this additional eye is an emergent property of the fusion of all seven demons into one entity? (Major kuzos to Taranzadidnothingbad and IronHeartAlliance on this front.)

  • Also on Pandemonium’s page, this realm is mentioned to be the Kingdom of Light, and Baltad is clearly the king. Plus we know from his page that his crown contains a fraction of his power. (On that note, why didn’t he get it back after the Demon of Boundless Hunger was defeated?)

  • Where’s Greg? I assume he’s in the Darkness Before Time as a less powerful counterpoint to Baltad or something, which checks out as Baltad mentions the Darkness Before Time being cold.

  • Obviously it’s Pandemonium, and not Sacred Oaths with its eye back, that returns at the end of the world. Thank you guys for catching that, though I’m very nervous to see how they could return at this point. Clearly either Argok stops doing his job properly or the gods stop appointing champions or both. I’m still fairly certain Quest Sprout will defeat Eternal Slumber (due to his picture at the wizard ball) but I’m not sure yet what will set off Stabnarok. Something with Xiphos, probably, as I said before.

  • The name “Pandemonium” is cute. But being amazed that it has “demon” in it is kind of like being amazed that “ineffectual” has “effect” in it. This is because “pandemonium” is a word derived from
various Greek roots which means, extremely literally, “all the demons”, a word which Milton genuinely just made up to refer to the capital of Hell. The word’s sense of chaos and confusion came later and was emergent from that original use. So of course Matthew’s entity of all the demons has a name meaning “all the demons”. (For clarity: Absolutely no offense to all of you guys for admiring it; it is a nice choice, though I don’t think a secret genius pun.)

  • Notice also that the one weird black eye is the one that doesn’t talk throughout this (also not appearing in “Finally”. And whenever Pandemonium refers to itself, its pronouns are colored using only the colors of demons one through four.

We’d better get more of this-

Looking back, in At the Dawn of Time, the Demon of Sacred Oaths mentions that Kargob stabbed him right in the eye. Perhaps there’s a battle between Pandemonium and Kargob and Pandemonium loses his 7th eye prior to being split into the demonswords. This would most likely happen if Pandemonium forces his way into the Darkness Before Time and Kargob takes excessive offence to the intrusion.

I imagine a young, grumpy Kargob would be more than capable of just grabbing the entire Kingdom of Light and fashioning it into a Sword of Light just to stab Pandemonium in the eye, then lopping him into seven sword-shaped sections.

He’d probably then notice a dejected Baltad, and adopt him out of recompense.

Had a thought about this that I had to express, lead me to finally creating an account!

So could it be that Kargob not only splits the demonswords from pandemonium in the fight but actually creates the universe (perhaps accidentally, afterall he chose a champion by accidentally dropping his sword) FROM THE EIGHTH EYE?

Don’t know if someone’s already thought this, but had to put it out there.

Wait the orange eye before sacred oath is never seen before is it possibly the original 7 eyes?

Maybe sacred got stab in the eye and that make the original 7th disappear because there no longer need of him? Or he’s just very dangerous so kargob banish him to the void? Or he just haven’t wake up yet and Wait so pandemonium is the god of mischief and deception? Cause their? Bio said that they? Are a god too…
Edit: why is boundless hunger green?
And did the text that pandemonium said kinda like Greek symbol?

And yes I’m just trash talking

Looks like the Sword of Eternal Slumber was lying when he said in swords comic CV that he existed before Kargob filled the universe with light?

I wonder if the end of time will be when the demons are returned to the panium

Also if it’s a void of endless light, why are there shadows?
