Swords | DLXXVIII - The Darkness Before Time

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://swordscomic.com/comic/DLXXVIII/

I have so many questions. This basically lays out the entire timeline, in snippets. Crazy. Who’s that voice? Bograk maybe?

I think it’s Kargob since Argok says Kargob is sleeping and the universe around them is in darkness so it’s probably Kargob waking and getting ready to use the sword of light created by Argok to create the universe.

Very possible. Though, the Scar of Light looks like the Sword of Light and it was created by the Time Knife, while Argok was there. They also could be in Kargob’s void.
You know how Xiphos and Bograk and Kargob were in the demon king? It could be similar, they could have awoken Kargob by well… slicing him. It’s complicated, and the more I think about it, the less sense it all makes. And where are the others? I guess we have to wait for more comics, lol

To gaze into the Time Knife is to know the SparkNotes summary of all things

Dumb jokes aside, I agree with @Banana_Katana, that’s definitely the Sword of Light. I would assume this is kind of a big bang moment, when all of existence comes into creation. Argok seems like a pretty neutral, balance based god, while the other gods and demon swords represent extremes and imbalances. Since there is good, there must also be evil to counteract it, and vice versa. I hypothesize Argok interfered with the demon war to stop existence from falling into imbalance, and probably would have done the same if the gods had tried to destroy the demons permanently. Just a theory though.

Also, Tim seems pretty chill considering he. . . you know. . . got his hand chopped off.

I guess (I’m so sorry) time heals all wounds, eh?

…and it’s the Bootstrap Paradox. Excellent.

Pretty much everything above the hilt of the longsword looks familiar enough, but the ones below are less so… I see future Sharply (obviously) but also those two quotes about questions and merblades are from one of the early comics about Smith’s merblade son Edge. The “Honk” appears to be from Swordle? And the Stabnarok part was alluded to when Quest Sprout met the Endwyrm. The other quotes I don’t seem to recognize, although the smartsword one is pretty generic, and the mess one seems really familiar for some reason.

Wait, look at the pommel! Is that the Demon Sword of Sacred Oaths with its eye back? That really can’t be good.

Yeah I’m going to agree that it’s probably Kargob in that light.

I’m pretty sure the “how did i wind up in this mess…” it reminds me either of the wind blade comic, or that vacation blade comic. Either really.

The meteor one is alluded to when sharp sharply’s future self comes and talks about meteors, the infinity swords and more. Back to the forte

Possible theory:
That possibly that sliver is sentient. Thus this sentient sliver of light is forged by Argok into the Sword of Light. Then Argok goes and gives it to Kargob to cut open the darkness.
Then again the core of this theory (that the sliver of light is sentient) is all based on the fact that in the last panel, the light is the one talking. And not something else.
(Sorry for such a long post)

Wait a sec… check CLXXIV! That speech bubble looks just like Bograk’s. You have a good point though- I never saw the light as talking, but it makes sense.

Nice job spotting that!
So maybe the sword/sliver of light IS Bograk.
Or will be.
And being that close to Kargob might explain their bromance.
(Got the bromance part from here:[Kargob archive page])(Swords | A webcomic by Matthew Wills))

Oh my goodness I didn’t notice it until just now! At the very tip of the Longsword of Time there’s a super faint word I had to zoom in to read- “Hello?”

Just like the end of the comic.

Wow! I completely missed that. Great spot!
(I probably missed it because my brightness is down so much)

After the cross-guard, there’s the phrase “Is it this one?” Which I think alludes to CLVI-Five Eyes Blue Demon, confirming that the sword of endless chaos becomes a problem soon.

What’s up with the Christ-the-Redeemer-looking-thing between Kargob and Bogg?

Although I also thought it looked like that at first, upon closer inspection I think that’s actually a volcano spewing an unreasonably-tall geyser of lava.
